The Voice of Medicine in Greater New Orleans Since 1878

Our Mission
Founded in 1878, OPMS is dedicated to serving as the advocate for the medical profession in Greater New Orleans for the benefit of patients and the community, and to be the primary proponent of the ethical practice of medicine.
Our Legacy
OPMS's heritage is deeply woven into the fabric of New Orleans. For generations, our physicians have been on the front lines of public health – leading efforts in polio eradication, championing the smoking cessation movement, and developing the EMS protocols that continue to save lives in our city today. When Hurricane Katrina devastated our region and threatened to drain our medical community, OPMS stood firm, and today, more than 2,000 physicians call Greater New Orleans home.
What We Do
OPMS works alongside the Louisiana State Medical Society to advocate for meaningful legislative and regulatory reform, helping physicians navigate the ever-changing landscape of third-party insurance, government mandates, and healthcare policy. We are committed to ensuring that physicians can focus on what matters most – their patients.
Beyond advocacy, OPMS fosters connection, collegiality, and professional development among physicians across Orleans Parish. From our Board of Directors to our Council of Governors, our leadership reflects the diversity, expertise, and dedication of the physicians we represent.
Our Community
New Orleans is unlike anywhere else in the world, and so are the challenges our physicians face. Poverty, chronic disease, the lingering effects of natural disasters, and health disparities have long shaped the landscape of medicine in our region. OPMS physicians meet those challenges head on, every single day, with compassion, expertise, and an unwavering commitment to their patients and community.
